Accessibility at Upset Research

Upset Research wants every visitor to be able to read this site and send the contact form, including with a screen reader, a keyboard alone, or type scaled well above the default.

What the site does

These are the measures built into the pages. You can check every one of them yourself.

  • Semantic HTML. Real headings in order, real lists, real tables with row headers, and landmark elements for the header, the navigation, the main content and the footer.
  • Keyboard navigable. Every link, button and form field is reachable and operable with the keyboard alone. The navigation menus open without a mouse, and no element traps focus.
  • System color scheme respected. The site reads your operating system setting and renders in light or dark to match it. There is no switch to find and no setting that overrides your choice.
  • Text scales. Type, spacing and layout are set in relative units where it matters, so zooming the page or raising the browser font size reflows the text instead of clipping it.
  • Readable at phone width. Pages lay out in a single column on a narrow screen with no sideways scrolling.
  • Contrast. Body text, headings and links are set against their backgrounds for legibility in both the light and the dark rendering.
  • No motion, no audio, no popups. Nothing animates on its own, nothing plays, and nothing interrupts reading.
  • Labeled forms. Every contact form field has a visible label tied to its input, and errors are described in words.
  • Decorative images are hidden from screen readers. Diagrams that carry meaning are described in the text next to them.

What we do not claim

No conformance level is claimed here. Upset Research has not put this site through a formal audit against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, so it will not print a level it has not tested. The guidelines are what the pages were built toward, and the list above is what was done.

Known limits: the site loads its fonts from a third party service, so a blocked font request falls back to a system font; and the navigation uses a dropdown that opens on hover on a wide screen, with keyboard focus as the alternative. If either causes you a problem, that is worth reporting.

How to report a problem

Write to hello@upsetresearch.com. It helps to name the page, what you were trying to do, and what you use to browse, for example a screen reader and its version. A message with none of that is still worth sending.

Reports are read by a person. You get a reply, and a fix where one is possible. If something cannot be fixed quickly, the reply says so and offers another way to get the same information or to send the same request.

If the form itself is the barrier

You never have to use the contact form. Email the race, the election date and the budget straight to hello@upsetresearch.com and the reply is the same written scope and price.

Tell us about your race.

Send the office, the election date and what you have set aside for research. We write back with what we would do, what arrives each month and what it costs.
